I cannot recommend a better Landscape visionary than John Russell. He was able to adapt to every component of my yard and when encountered with shallow bedrock, he and his seasoned crew never missed a beat, and on the fly, designed a more beatufiul garden setting. He was in and out in 2 weeks and although requirements were added, he fought to get the best pricing and his crew worked seamlessly to implement his evolving creation. Just completed early March 2012, I can't wait until all the plants and sod kick in.

I would like to take a moment to thank you for your work on our drainage problem. Your attention to details, patients in discussions about alternatives with me and attitude toward perfection was refreshing. While you were not the lowest bidder, I had a better feeling about your knowledge of my problem and what was necessary to correct it.
Your crew was very efficient. They were on time, worked steadily all day, even in the sweltering heat, were easy to talk to and offered suggestions about minor changes that needed to be made as they were discovered. When the job was finished they cleaned up any trash, picked up loose stone, replaced sod and put things back in the order it was when they began.
This is the third time I have tried to solve our drainage problem over the years, and while time will tell just how well this job will do in accomplishing that goal, I must say, at least it appears like a “professional” job was done this time and on your estimate. I look forward to working with you on another project as soon as possible.

My husband and I highly recommend John Russell for any landscape project! When we made the decision to begin the large undertaking of renovating our yard, I had one request: that the person who designed the project also be the person to implement it. We had worked with landscape “designers” in the past who charged lots of money and drew wonderful pictures, but were nowhere around when snags developed in their plans or alterations were needed…this was NOT the case with John Russell and his team.
John did things correctly from the first visit. He drew the plans for our yard on site…troubleshooting from the very beginning. He is knowledgeable about design, horticulture, and architecture. He has a tremendous eye for detail. What you see with John is what you get: he doesn’t make promises he can’t keep, but he definitely keeps the promises he makes. He was extremely flexible and was willing to make the necessary adjustments when our yard “uncovered” some surprises that no one knew were there.
My husband and I are very busy people, and for the first time in our married lives, this home project did not completely occupy our free time or cause us stress during our workdays. We always knew that John and his crew had been at work while we were gone…the progress at the end of each day was obvious. His crew is trustworthy, friendly, knowledgeable, and hardworking. They are a well-oiled machine. Our yard and driveway were always cleaned and straightened at the end of the day, making the construction all the more tolerable. Our neighbors (with whom we share a driveway) were also pleasantly delighted at the degree of cleanup that occurred at the end of each day.

My wife, Ellen, and I have been extremely happy with all the work John Russell and his crew have done for us. I was originally referred to him by a friend in the summer of 2005. I had just finished a big addition and remodel job. We had to completely start over on the landscape. I talked to some different landscape architects and had a big problem paying them to design something that they did not implement. I could see that being a big problem when an issue came up over "he said or she said". I wasn't going that route. I love the fact that John did all the design work on site with us. We worked through the budget and then he came and did all the implementation. Since then, I have had him back for the past 3 summers to do other design and landscaping work. Also, he stands behind everything he does. He has come back and replaced a couple of bushes that were not doing well due to some bug damage. I know I can always count on John. When we decided to re-landscape our back yard, I called on several potential landscape architects to help us decide what we should consider. Having a pool and a love for tropical landscapes was a bit of a snag as Birmingham is not a tropical environment. However, we had already grown some palm trees successfully and wanted to keep them in the plans for the new yard. I had notice John and his team working at a neighbors house and was particularly interested in the work style. John and his team were consistently on the job, neat (can you imagine) and the transformation I had already seen was attractive and done quickly. All of these things appealed to us.
When we met John on a rainy Sunday afternoon, we knew he was the right choice. He listened. He took the time to look at what we already had and carefully included what we loved into the new plans. Imagine having someone listen to your wishes, turn it into a work of art then make it magically appear in a workable plan. To us, finding John was a gift.
In the prep stages, John included our choices and allowed us to hand pick large boulders, lighting, and other elements we wanted. His resourcefulness made good use of the many plants we already had and saved us money by taking care of them until it was their turn to be included in the new landscape. His team worked efficiently every day, professional, capable and on-time, cleaning up as they go and leaving a neat space at the end of each day. They showed a great deal of respect to us and our home.
Nine days form the start, the masterpiece was completed! We got more than a landscape we loved, it's truly a work of art, or as I like to call it, and ArtScape! Every season it gets more lush and fragrant. Others see it and are in awe of the detail and the uniqueness of the design. Most commonly our visitors comment on the resort feel they get when enjoying our space, day or night! It is remarkable and we could not not be more pleased with John and his team, the process and the results.
