Planting Plants are used initially to form space. Evergreen trees and shrubs are used to create the framing or backdrop to the garden. Shrubs layer in next to form low walls and masses that push the eye and enframe space. Ground covers and perennials create edges and give a season rhythm to the garden. Finally, lawns, walks and patios are used to create the ground plane for walking, playing and seating. All plantings shown in this section were designed and installed by John Russell Landscape Architect, Inc.
