Morris Landscaping
We at John Russell Landscape Architect have developed landscape design techniques for the reuse of concrete onsite in landscaping to build walls, tables, benches, stairs, firepits, etc. In many job situations concrete must be removed for the creation of a new drive, patio, swimming pool or terrace. Instead of hauling this material to a landfill, we use it enhance the landscape. Please see the galleries for examples of used concrete in many landscaping service applications. Think globally, act locally. We have designed and implemented hundreds of projects, so let us save you money by designing your next Alabama landscaping project today!
John Russell Landscape Architect - Morris Landscape Design
Most of our Morris landscape design drawings are done on-site with pencil on trash paper. The process is simple. We request a plot plan or survey from the Morris client in advance (sent either by fax or e-mail). We take this to a copy center and blow it up to either 10 or 20 scale. In the interim, the Morris client collects pictures of gardens and garden features that appeal to him/her, creates a list of plants that he/she likes and does not like, and thinks about problem and use areas. We schedule a meeting at the client's property for a length of time that will allow an entire landscape design plan to be drawn. This usually takes 3-8 hours and we do charge a design/consultation fee. Once at the clients' house we do a 1-2 hour walk through and discuss the landscape design drawing project. Then we use the scaled plot plan to create a base map adding anything that is not on the original such as trees, slopes, shrubs, decks, etc. Once an accurate base map is created then the fun begins.
Morris Lawns
Lawn selection should be made based upon light conditions, maintenance practices, use and texture. Here in Morris the best grasses for shade are fescues and St Augustine. Fescue is very inexpensive and evergreen, but must be over-seeded at least once a year, does poorly in hot southern droughts and cannot take chemical treatments. St. Augustine is deciduous and aggressive, takes drought and shade well, but is susceptible to grubs and is chemically sensitive. Care must be taken when hiring a Morris lawn landscaping service or applying one's own treatments.
For sun, Bermuda is very inexpensive and can be started from seed or sod. It is aggressive and very hardy, but cannot stand any shade. Additionally, Bermuda tends to be thin and requires professional chemical treatments to keep it looking good and weed free.

Morris Outdoor Deck Fireplaces
When considering outdoor fireplaces that are to be placed upon wooden decks it is important to take safety into consideration. It is possible to drop cinder on the deck, which can accidentally cause a fire. It is important to follow adequate safety measures when installing these outdoor fireplaces. Manufacturer may offer trays that are to be placed below the fireplace to collect, all burnt particles that fall out of a dying fire. Users may also use special stands that can prevent such accidents from occurring. They also need to be placed appropriately so that smoke and heat emanating from it is not directly exposed to the plants, in and around the porch. They should not be placed in a manner wherein people could bump into them on their way in or out of the house. They are available in a wide range of designs including beautiful ceramic and brick varieties.
